Hindu Reform Movements

The movements of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries that re-read the tradition against colonial rule and social reform, from the Brahmo Samaj to the Arya Samaj.

The reform movements answered the challenges of empire and modernity by returning, as they read it, to the pure sources: the Upanishads for the Brahmo Samaj, the Veda alone for the Arya Samaj. They reshaped Hindu education, worship, and social teaching across India.
