Smarta Tradition

The tradition of the smriti, which worships the five deities as forms of the one Brahman and follows Shankara's Advaita as its philosophy.

The Smarta tradition is the conservative mainstream of temple and household Hinduism in much of India: the panchayatana worship of Shiva, Vishnu, Devi, Surya, and Ganesha, the mathas Shankara founded, and the Advaita Vedanta that reads the many gods as the one reality.
