Naturalism
Naturalism holds that nature is all there is: the universe of matter, energy, and natural law needs no god, soul, or purpose beyond itself.
Naturalism is the world view that nature is the whole of reality. Everything is part of the physical universe, governed by natural law and open to scientific study. There is no supernatural realm — no gods, spirits, or souls separable from bodies.
Ultimate Reality
The universe itself is ultimate: matter and energy in motion, structured by physical law. Beginning or eternal, it was not made by a mind and aims at no goal. Mind and consciousness are late products of physical processes, not exceptions to them.
The Human Condition
Humans are animals shaped by evolution, remarkable but not cosmic exceptions. Our troubles — ignorance, disease, cruelty, death — are natural facts, not punishments or symptoms of a fall. There is no rescuer coming; whatever can be fixed, we must fix ourselves.
Knowledge and Truth
Knowledge comes from the senses, reason, and above all the scientific method: observe, hypothesize, test, revise. Untestable claims are set aside. Religious experience is real as experience, but explained by the brain, not by contact with another world.
Right and Wrong
There is no cosmic lawgiver, so morality is a human achievement: values built from empathy, cooperation, and consequences. Most naturalists ground right and wrong in reducing suffering and increasing flourishing, here and now.
Human Destiny
Death ends the person. The mind is what the brain does, so when the brain stops, consciousness stops; there is no afterlife, judgment, or resurrection. What survives is our effect on others — which is why this one life carries such weight.
The Conversation
Naturalism is the world view we most often meet in the modern West, and we respect its demand for evidence and its intellectual honesty. We differ at the foundation: we hold that nature's order, and the minds grasping it, point beyond themselves to a Creator — and that the resurrection of Jesus is a historical claim worth testing, not a myth to dismiss.
