It is the autonomous Anglican province in Australia, led by the Primate of Australia and organized in dioceses that retain significant independence.
The Anglican Church of Australia became an autonomous church with its own constitution in 1962, after origins in the Church of England chaplaincy that arrived with the First Fleet in 1788. Its General Synod brings together dioceses across Australia, whose traditions range from evangelical to Anglo Catholic.
