dulia
Service; the honor given by a servant.
Tagged: Catholic Eastern Orthodox
Technical Meaning
The veneration given to the saints and angels, named from the Greek douleia, service. It stands below latria, the worship due to God alone, and its higher form toward Mary is called hyperdulia. Candles before a saint's shrine, feast days, and prayers for a saint's intercession all belong to dulia; the honor passes through the saint to God.
