It is a conservative Presbyterian denomination founded in 1973 by congregations that left the southern Presbyterian church over theological and organizational concerns.
The Presbyterian Church in America was organized in Birmingham, Alabama, in December 1973, first under the name National Presbyterian Church. It subscribes to the Westminster Confession of Faith and Catechisms as containing the system of doctrine taught in Scripture. It is governed by sessions, presbyteries, and an annual General Assembly.
