It is a Reformed denomination of Dutch immigrant origin that separated from the Reformed Church in America in 1857 over hymn singing, open communion, and other practices.
The Christian Reformed Church in North America was founded in 1857 by Dutch immigrant congregations in Michigan that left the Reformed Church in America. It confesses the Three Forms of Unity, namely the Belgic Confession, the Heidelberg Catechism, and the Canons of Dort. Its congregations in Canada and the United States are governed through classes and a binational synod.
