The International Church of the Foursquare Gospel is distinct in its fourfold message of Jesus Christ as Saviour, Baptizer with the Holy Spirit, Healer, and Soon Coming King.
The church was founded by evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson, who opened Angelus Temple in Los Angeles in 1923 and incorporated the denomination in 1927. The name Foursquare comes from her 1922 sermon on the four faces in Ezekiel's vision, read as the four aspects of Christ's ministry. The church is governed centrally through a president and board, and its congregations now work in many countries.
