The churches that baptize only professing believers, by immersion, holding the local congregation autonomous under Christ and the Bible as their only creed in the strictest forms.
The Baptist family began in Amsterdam and London in the early seventeenth century. Believer's baptism, congregational autonomy, and religious liberty are its marks, and its bodies range from the Southern Baptist Convention to the historic Black Baptist conventions.
