What is happening
The annual Nagar Kirtan at Gurdwara Sahib in Yuba City, California, returns for its 47th year from October 30 to November 1, 2026. The three-day celebration centres on the gurdwara at 2468 Tierra Buena Road, and it culminates on Sunday, November 1, in the Nagar Kirtan itself, a religious procession of about four and a half miles through the city. The procession is led by the Panj Piare, the Five Beloved Ones, and carries the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh scripture and living Guru, on a decorated float.
The details
First held in 1980, the Yuba City parade has grown into one of the largest Sikh gatherings outside India, with annual attendance estimated at 100,000 to 200,000 people. Volunteers serve free food along the route to everyone, of every faith and background. That service is langar, the community kitchen instituted by Guru Nanak, and it expresses the Sikh principles of equality, generosity, and selfless service, or seva. The weekend also marks the Gurpurab of Guru Nanak and the Gurta Gaddi Divas of the Guru Granth Sahib.
Why it is recorded here
The Nagar Kirtan is the largest recurring public expression of Sikh life in North America. This post records the 2026 gathering as the Territorial Dispatch, Yuba City's local paper, reported it on October 22, 2026; the source link on this page leads to the report.
