A Psalm of David “The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want”

The passage
“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.” The psalm walks the whole of a life under that care: green pastures and still waters, a soul restored, paths of righteousness, a valley of deep shadow walked without fear because the shepherd is there, a table prepared in the presence of enemies, and a house to dwell in forever. It ends in certainty: “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.”
Where it stands
Psalm 23 is a psalm of David and the best-known passage in the Psalter. It is read at bedsides, gravesides, and kitchen tables, and its first line has become the confession of believers in every century since it was written.
