“I call on the Lord in my distress and He answers me”

The passage
“In my distress I called to the LORD, and He answered me.” The psalmist is far from home among people who love war and hate peace, and his whole prayer rises out of that distance. The answer he reports is complete before the psalm goes on to name the trouble: he called, and he was heard.
Where it stands
Psalm 120 is the first of the fifteen Songs of Ascents, Psalms 120 to 134, the pilgrim songs sung on the road up to Jerusalem. The collection that ends at the Temple begins here, with a cry from far away.
