The Greatest Commandment, “love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind”

The passage
A lawyer asks Jesus which is the great commandment in the Law, testing him. Jesus answers from Deuteronomy: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment.” He adds the second, love of neighbor as oneself, and says that on these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.
Where it stands
Matthew 22 stands in the controversies of the final week in Jerusalem, as Pharisees, Sadducees, and Herodians test Jesus in turn. His answer gathers the whole of Scripture's ethics into two sentences.
