The passage
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” The verse is the gospel in one sentence: the love of God, the gift of the Son, and the promise held out to whoever believes.
Where it stands
John 3 records the night conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus, the teacher of Israel who came asking about the kingdom. The new birth is the conversation's first word, and this verse is its summit.
