“Let Us make man in Our image, in Our likeness”

The passage
On the sixth day God speaks the words that set humankind apart from everything made before: “Let Us make man in Our image, in Our likeness.” The verse that follows gives humankind dominion over the creatures of the earth.
Where it stands
Genesis 1:26 stands at the climax of the creation account. The image of God in humankind is the ground the site returns to throughout its treatment of human dignity, and the plural speech of God in the verse has been read as an early trace of the Trinity since the church's first centuries.
