The passage
The verse is the Shema's command. Israel is to love the LORD its God with the whole of itself: all its heart, all its soul, and all its strength. No part of the person is left outside the love commanded.
Where it stands
Deuteronomy 6 opens Moses's exposition of the law, immediately after the confession that the LORD is one. The words are to be on Israel's heart, taught to its children, and spoken at home and on the road. Jesus later names this the greatest commandment.
