“Put to death, then, the parts of you that are earthly: immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and the greed that is idolatry”
Tagged: Christian
The passage
The command is direct: put to death what is earthly in you. Paul names the works of the old life, sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and the greed he calls idolatry, and he treats them as things to be killed, not managed.
Where it stands
Colossians 3 turns from the letter's teaching to its ethics. Those who have been raised with Christ are told to seek the things above, and the putting to death of the old life is the first movement of putting on the new self.
