The passage
Paul reaches back to the first day of creation. The God who said “Let light shine out of darkness” has shone in our hearts, he writes, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
Where it stands
Second Corinthians 4 is Paul's defense of his ministry. The treasure of the gospel is held in jars of clay, and this verse states where the light of that treasure comes from before the chapter counts the cost of carrying it.
