It is the Oriental Orthodox church of Eritrea, recognized as autocephalous after Eritrean independence and headed by a patriarch in Asmara.
The Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church shares the Tewahedo tradition of Ethiopia, from which it became administratively separate after Eritrea became independent in the early 1990s. Its worship uses Ge'ez and Tigrinya, and its canon and liturgy closely follow the Ethiopian Orthodox pattern.
