It is the autocephalous church covering most of modern Greece, governed by the Holy Synod in Athens under the Archbishop of Athens and All Greece.
The Church of Greece was declared autocephalous by the Greek state in 1833 and was recognized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in the Tomos of 1850. Some dioceses in northern Greece and the islands, called the New Lands, remain under the spiritual jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate while administered by the Church of Greece.
