Acharya Tulsi created the Saman order around 1980, a rank between householder and monk whose members, the samans and samanis, keep most monastic vows and may travel abroad to teach. The order let Terapanthi teachers serve the growing Jain diaspora in person, and its samanis became the best known Jain teachers in North America and Europe.
