A procession is the Church at prayer on the move, carrying an image, a cross, or the Eucharist through public streets.

How It Is Practiced

On feasts such as Corpus Christi, Good Friday, and the patronal days of towns, the congregation leaves the church in ordered ranks — cross and candles first, then banners and the image or monstrance under a canopy, clergy and people following — singing hymns as the route passes through streets that may be strewn with flowers or sawdust carpets. The procession begins and ends with prayer and blessings, and the whole town, including those who only watch, is drawn into its path.

Purpose and Meaning

A procession claims public space for prayer. It teaches that faith is not confined to the church building: work, streets, and homes are carried inside the act of worship as the sacred passes through them. Historically processions also gave thanks, asked for rain or deliverance from plague, and displayed the ordered unity of a community before God and itself.
