The Text

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.

Historical Context

The Glory Be, known in Latin as the Gloria Patri, is a 'minor doxology' that took shape in the 4th century, when its explicitly Trinitarian wording also served to affirm the full divinity of the Son and the Spirit against Arian teaching. Although catalogued here with Catholic prayers, where it closes each decade of the Rosary, it is used across traditions: Orthodox Christians pray a close form of it, and it appears in Anglican, Lutheran, and other Protestant services.

Use and Practice

The prayer is said at the end of each decade of the Rosary, after psalms in the Liturgy of the Hours and in Anglican offices, and as a brief act of praise in personal prayer throughout the day.
