The Text

Fatima Prayer

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those most in need of Thy mercy.

Hail Holy Queen (Salve Regina)

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy,
hail, our life, our sweetness and our hope.
To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve;
to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears.
Turn then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us,
and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary!

Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,
that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Historical Context

The Rosary developed in the late Middle Ages as a structured meditation on events in the lives of Christ and Mary, counted on a string of beads; tradition associates its promotion with St. Dominic in the 13th century, and its form was standardized under Pope Pius V in 1569. The Fatima Prayer was added after the reported apparitions at Fátima, Portugal, in 1917, where the children said Mary asked that it be prayed after each decade. The Hail Holy Queen, an 11th-century Marian antiphon, closes the Rosary.

Use and Practice

The Rosary is prayed by following the beads: the Apostles' Creed and an Our Father open it, each decade consists of an Our Father, ten Hail Marys, and a Glory Be while meditating on a mystery, with the Fatima Prayer often added, and the Hail Holy Queen concludes it. Catholics pray it daily, in parish groups, and at wakes and funerals.
