Pilgrimage (Catholic)

Catholic pilgrimage is a journey to a shrine undertaken as prayer, penance, thanksgiving, or petition.

How It Is Practiced

The pilgrim travels — on foot where possible — to a place made holy by an event, a relic, or an apparition: Jerusalem, Rome, Santiago de Compostela, Lourdes, Fatima, Guadalupe. The journey is structured by prayer at stages along the way, confession and Mass at the shrine, and often a specific petition or vow. Many shrines keep the tokens pilgrims leave behind: crutches, plaques, and candles recording graces received.

Purpose and Meaning

Pilgrimage treats the body as part of prayer: weariness, weather, and distance are offered, not merely endured. The pilgrim leaves the ordinary place to stand in a place where the tradition says heaven came near, and returns home changed and carrying blessing back. It is among the oldest continuous devotions in the Church, and its roads shaped the map of Europe.
