The Angelus

The Angelus is a short prayer on the Incarnation, prayed at morning, noon, and evening at the sound of a bell.

How It Is Practiced

Three times a day — traditionally at six in the morning, noon, and six in the evening — church bells ring and work pauses. The prayer alternates verses from the Annunciation story with Hail Marys: 'The angel of the Lord declared unto Mary,' answered by 'And she conceived of the Holy Spirit.' It ends with a collect asking that the grace of the Incarnation be poured into the heart. In Easter season the Regina Caeli replaces it.

Purpose and Meaning

The Angelus punctures the working day with the memory of the Incarnation: God entering ordinary time, announced to an ordinary girl in a workshop town. Its brevity is the point — three minutes in which the day is re-collected around that event. The bell made the devotion communal even for those praying alone in fields and workshops.
