Significance
The New Year of the Trees, one of the four new years named in the Mishnah. In the Land of Israel it marks the season when the earliest-blooming trees wake from winter, and in Jewish law it fixes the age of a tree for the tithes taken from its fruit. The kabbalists of Safed gave the day a seder of fruits and four cups of wine, and in modern Israel it has become a day of tree planting and care for the land.
Observance
Eating the fruit of the Land of Israel, above all the seven species named in the Torah — wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and dates; a Tu B'Shvat seder in the kabbalistic tradition; planting trees.
