Recurrence: Western Easter computus (the Friday after the octave of Corpus Christi).
Significance
The feast of the Sacred Heart honours the love of Christ under the image of his heart, pierced on the cross and burning with love for humanity. It falls on the Friday in the week after Corpus Christi's octave day. The devotion spread widely after the visions of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque in the seventeenth century.
Observance
Churches hold exposition and Benediction, consecrations to the Sacred Heart are renewed, and the day is kept as a day of prayer for priests.
