Significance
June 29 keeps together Saint Peter and Saint Paul, the two apostles most associated with the founding of the Church in Rome. Tradition holds that both were martyred in Rome under Nero. Peter is pictured with the keys of the kingdom, and Paul with the sword of his martyrdom and of the word.
Observance
Mass honours the two apostles together, and in Rome the day is kept with particular solemnity at their basilicas.
