Significance
Orthodox Palm Sunday celebrates Christ's entry into Jerusalem, when the crowds greeted him with palm branches and cries of hosanna. It opens Holy Week in the Orthodox calendar, following the Saturday of Lazarus. The feast proclaims Christ as king even as it turns toward his passion in the days ahead.
Observance
Palms or pussy willows are blessed and carried in procession, and the services of Holy Week begin that evening.
