The voluntary prayer of the last third of the night, risen to after sleep: the devotion Islam reserves for its most intimate hour.

How It Is Practiced
The worshipper sleeps, then rises before dawn — the tradition counts the last third of the night as the hour when God 'descends to the lowest heaven' and asks who is calling — and prays cycles of prayer with long recitation, ending with the single odd cycle of witr. It is prayed alone and quietly, and the Qur'an praises those 'who forsake their beds to call upon their Lord in fear and hope.' In Ramadan the mosque fills for it; outside Ramadan it is mostly the practice of the few.
Purpose and Meaning
Tahajjud is devotion at cost: it spends sleep, the thing Ramadan's fast never touches. Its theology is of audience — prayer when no one sees and nothing is owed, purely for the encounter. Muhammad's own practice made it the benchmark of sincerity in the tradition's memory: the night vigil is where the religion keeps its proof that worship can be wanted, not only required.
