The printing press

The book made cheap: the Reformation’s engine, Rome’s regulated instrument, and — in Arabic script — a technology admitted by placement, its sacred texts reserved to the scribes for three centuries.

Gutenberg’s press (c. 1450) cut the price of a book by two orders of magnitude and thereby changed who could argue with whom. The Reformers were its first masters — Luther’s pamphlets were the century’s bestsellers — and the Catholic response was double: the Index of Prohibited Books (1559) and, simultaneously, the Church’s own vast print enterprise of catechisms, missals, and controversy. The Ottoman world adopted print for some languages early (Jewish, Greek, and Armenian presses in Istanbul from the 1490s) while Arabic-script religious printing waited until Müteferrika’s press of 1727, under a fatwa that licensed secular works and reserved sacred texts to the scribes — a placement decision, like the Amish telephone shanty, about where a technology may live.

The Stance Register

Each stance is recorded with its rationale in the tradition's own terms and its sources. Where a tradition argues with itself, the register says so.

Catholic Regulated

Print was both weapon and threat: the Church licensed presses, printed its own case prodigiously, and answered uncontrolled books with the Index (1559–1966) — a regulation regime, not a refusal of the medium, which its missions carried to Mexico, Goa, Manila, and Beijing.

Islamic Regulated

Ottoman authorities licensed printing selectively: minority presses printed in their own scripts from the 1490s while Arabic religious texts remained scribal until 1727, when Müteferrika’s press was authorized for secular works. The delay is usually ascribed to the scribes’ guilds and calligraphy’s sacred status rather than to a doctrine against print as such.

Jewish Embraced

Hebrew printing began within a generation of Gutenberg (Reggio, 1475) and Jewish communities adopted the press without recorded communal prohibition — the technology that carried the Talmud to every study house was received as it deserved.

Mainline Protestant Embraced

Print was the Reformation’s delivery system: vernacular Bibles, catechisms, and pamphlets made the priesthood of all believers a media fact. Protestant authorities then built their own censorships — the embrace was of the press, not of press freedom.
