Five premises, five answers: the conjugal act’s structure (Rome), stewardship of the family (the mainline), procreation accounted and health commanded (the responsa), classical permission within marriage (the fiqh) — and an evangelical consensus with one contested edge.

The modern contraceptive era opens with Lambeth 1930 — the Anglican Communion’s cautious first permission — and divides at Humanae vitae (1968), where Paul VI maintained the Catholic prohibition against the majority report of his own commission. The case is the register’s standard exhibit of a technology judged by five traditions on five different premises: the conjugal act’s structure, the family’s stewardship, population ethics, health, and women’s standing.
The Stance Register
Each stance is recorded with its rationale in the tradition's own terms and its sources. Where a tradition argues with itself, the register says so.
Catholic Condemned
Humanae vitae (1968) holds every conjugal act must remain open to life: artificial contraception is refused as a separation of the act’s unitive and procreative meanings, while periodic abstinence (and its modern fertility-awareness forms) is permitted as a use of the cycle God built. The dissent of Catholic theologians and the non-reception by much of the laity are part of the recorded history.

Evangelical Embraced
Evangelical acceptance followed the mainline pattern within a generation for contraception as such; the contested edge is again post-fertilization methods, which groups holding the person-from-conception premise classify with abortion.
- National Association of Evangelicals, statements on contraception (2010s)
Islamic Regulated
Classical fiqh permitted contraception within marriage (coitus interruptus is discussed in hadith without condemnation), and modern councils permit most reversible methods subject to spousal consent, refusing permanent sterilization except under necessity; state family-planning programs in Iran and Indonesia were run with clerical endorsement.

Jewish Regulated
Responsa permit most methods within marriage — the commandment to procreate being accounted fulfilled and maternal health a positive duty — with method-specific rulings (the pill’s halakhic advantages made it the preferred case in Orthodox responsa).

Mainline Protestant Embraced
Lambeth 1930 made the Anglican Communion the first major body to permit contraception within marriage, and the mainline churches followed to near-universal acceptance under stewardship of the family; remaining argument concerns methods that may act after fertilization, where positions migrate toward the embryo question.
