The makers’ own second thoughts are part of the record: the Franck Report, Pugwash, the 1983 pastoral, and a stance inside one tradition that moved from conditional tolerance to condemnation of possession within one lifetime.
The scientists built it, and then a portion of them — the Franck Report’s authors in June 1945, the petitioners around Szilard, the Federation of Atomic Scientists, the Russell–Einstein Manifesto of 1955 — tried to unbuild the world it made. The flashpoint is therefore double-entry: a technology entry in the register (where the traditions’ positions stand) and a conscience entry here (where the makers’ own judgment stands), because the two arguments proceeded in parallel for eighty years and periodically met — in the 1983 bishops’ pastoral, in the Pugwash conferences, in the 2017 Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons ratified early by the Holy See.
No party to this flashpoint has been refuted, which is why it remains one: deterrence prevented the wars it threatened to fight, at a moral price its defenders and its condemners calculate differently, and the weapons remain. The page is maintained as the positions move — Rome’s moved, measurably, between 1982 and 2017.
