Classical Tibetan

ཆོས་སྐད

The sacred language of Tibetan Buddhism, into which the whole Indian Buddhist canon was translated.

Tagged: Buddhist

When Buddhism crossed the Himalayas, its Sanskrit scriptures were translated into Tibetan with such systematic precision that Tibetan versions often preserve texts lost in their originals. Classical Tibetan, the chos skad or 'dharma language', carries the Kangyur and Tengyur and remains the language of Tibetan Buddhist scholarship.
