Catholic
Embraced
Catholic moral theology received anesthesia under the ordinary principle that relieving pain is a good; Pius XII’s 1957 address on anesthesia gave the tradition’s considered form: patients may refuse or accept, doctors may administer, and the relief of pain is not an evasion of any duty to suffer.

Mainline Protestant
Embraced
Simpson’s rebuttal — from Genesis 2:21, the deep sleep God caused before removing the rib — persuaded the Protestant mainstream, which adopted anesthesia as a mercy consistent with dominion over pain; the sorrows of the curse describe the world’s fallenness, they do not command its preservation.
