# Ash'ari Theology and Mu'tazila Theology: a Diptych comparison

Schema version 1.0. The Diptych displays; it does not score, rank, or adjudicate.

## 1. In its own words

### Ash'ari Theology

Ash'ari theology became, with the Maturidi school, the doctrinal mainstream of Sunni Islam, taught wherever the Shafi'i and Maliki schools of law are taught. It arose as the middle way between bare literalism and the Mu'tazila's rationalism.

### Mu'tazila Theology

The Mu'tazila were Islam's first systematic theologians, dominant under the early Abbasid caliphs and then displaced by the Ash'ari and Maturidi synthesis. Their questions never left Sunni theology, and their texts survive largely through the Zaidi transmission in Yemen.

## 2. Scale and spread

### Ash'ari Theology

Ash'ari theology is a school, not a membership body, and is not counted in adherents. It became the prevailing theological school of Sunni Islam and is taught across the Sunni world, from North Africa to Southeast Asia.

### Mu'tazila Theology

The Mu'tazila was a school of theology rather than a membership body, and no community today counts itself by the name. Its influence runs through later Sunni, Shia, and Zaydi theology and through modern reform readings of Islam.

## 19. What this comparison cannot settle

### Ash'ari Theology

This comparison sets two self-descriptions side by side; it does not decide between them. A tradition is a living range of positions, and each panel renders the range this site has documented, which is not the whole of the tradition. Where a cell is marked not yet documented, the gap belongs to this site's documentation, not to the tradition. Questions of truth between the panels turn on premises the reader brings: what counts as evidence, what authority is recognized, and what a human life is for. The instrument does not score, rank, or adjudicate.
