# Ajivika and Dharmic and Indic Religions: a Diptych comparison

Schema version 1.0. Each panel stands in its own documented terms; the binding carries the site's analysis of how the two positions relate.

## 1. In its own words

### Ajivika

The Ajivika school is extinct, and its founder Makkhali Gosala is known through Jain and Buddhist sources, not through any text of the school itself; its doctrine of niyati, strict fate, is likewise reported by rivals. The Ajivikas practised a severe asceticism for many centuries, received royal patronage, and carved caves in the Barabar hills that still stand, before the school faded from the record in the second millennium.

### Dharmic and Indic Religions

The grouping for the early Indian schools that stand outside the Vedic fold. In the centuries when the sramana movements were forming, teachers who rejected Vedic authority proposed accounts of the world that owe nothing to the sacrifice or the priesthood; the materialist, fatalist, and skeptic schools recorded here are the earliest of them, and each survives mainly in the reports of its rivals.

## 19. What this comparison cannot settle

### Ajivika

This comparison sets two self-descriptions side by side; it does not decide between them. A tradition is a living range of positions, and each panel renders the range this site has documented, which is not the whole of the tradition. Where a cell is marked not yet documented, the gap belongs to this site's documentation, not to the tradition. Questions of truth between the panels turn on premises the reader brings: what counts as evidence, what authority is recognized, and what a human life is for. The instrument's binding marks the site's own analysis of how the two panels relate; which panel is true is not the instrument's to settle.
